Farm and Ranch families reach out to children in the classroom through the Nebraska Ag in the Classroom Pen Pal Program

Farm and ranch families in rural Nebraska May not get to Lincoln or Omaha very often but they are contributing to agriculture education for them in a big way.

The Ag Pen Pal Program, sponsored by Nebraska Farm Bureau's Ag in the Classroom, helps farm and ranch families in rural Nebraska reach out to kids in the big city. Teachers sign up for the program and Ag in the Classroom pairs the class with a farm or ranch family that has also signed up for the program. The family is required to write a minimum of three times during the school year, but many write much more than that. From that point the teacher and the family communicate in the way that best fits them; some agree that email is best, others opt for snail mail and some even video diary.

This is my 2nd year participating in the Ag Pen Pal Program. Presently I have a teacher that loves e-mail and videos. I have had a blast with this class, they email me questions all the time and I love this high tech learning in the classroom where they can read my email together on the whiteboard! Honestly, It has opened my eyes. I now see small everyday farm things as a perfect photo or video opportunity.

I know that I can't bring a classroom in Omaha, Nebraska to my farm. But, if I can make a small difference for those kids and take my farm, 300 miles away, to them via pictures and videos...you know this farm gal is gonna try!

Breeding Choices

We spent a great deal of time researching and thinking about how genetics can contribute into different aspects of the farm within our herd.

Farming has it's ups and downs. Some days are easier than others. A calf gets hurt and consequently sick, learn more about the care that goes into even the youngest of the herd.

Cows Out!

When those barn doors open and the cows notice that the barn yard gate, shut to them all winter long, is swung wide open, It doesn’t take long; they’re off like yearlings sprung for the first time.

Friday Night Lights

All In A Day's Work

Friday Night Lights

Our Friday night didn't consist of dancing until dawn or headed to the local high school sports game. Instead our night consisted of flashlights, headlights and calf hide and seek.
